Project Case Study

Government of Sri Lanka and the Green Climate Fund as an integrated water management project in association with the cascade system which has become a World Heritage, the Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management Project (CRIWMP) or the Wew Gam Pubuduwa was commenced in the year 2017.
The ‘Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management’ project contributes to resuscitating ancient irrigation systems in three river basins (Malwathu Oya, Mi Oya, and Yan Oya) for effective water management and safe drinking water.

This is the first time in Sri Lanka that a nationwide integrated water management platform is being advanced.

The project sets a precedent for future river basin management planning and brings together a diverse range of actors.

The Government of Sri Lanka under the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, is implementing the project with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme.
